[DIY Done]
Well, here it is, step by step, including the final product at the end of the post, in all its glory (handles chosen by availability in the end). Let me know what you think! Did I succeed in modernizing my desk, or did I desecrate an antique? Me, personally, I'm delighted with it. By the way, the color is mostly accurate in the second-to-last photo.

gorge-irific!!!!!!! Can you take a close up of the top please? Did you fade the edges?....Oh Niki...you have creative juices flowing here!!
( mark will thank you!)
Thanks, Monica! I just painted the whole leather pad white (it took three coats!), and then taped off where it tapers up and painted the flat center yellow. Check back in about five minutes, though, and I'll have a close-up stuck in the middle, before the last two pics.
I agree--love the white edges around the yellow. Gives it a little somethin'!
Of course, I did just find out that I can never take the protective plastic shield off the surface without taking the paint with it. Argh. That's annoying. And there's a hair underneath it that I now can't remove. Next time I'm just buying a new one. ;)
Scratch that... I can lift it... just slowly, and from an angle. Then it's fine. Good. Now to go clip coupons and get some grading accomplished. :)
